Reef Trust Partnership

#During the International Year of the Reef in 2018, the Australian Government announced the largest ever single investment in reef protection.

This includes a $443.3 million partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to help fund new and existing projects that protect and restore the Reef – delivering and building on the Reef 2050 Plan.

As part of the Reef 2050 Plan and the Reef Trust Partnership, our commitment is also to spark new and innovative responses from, and collaborations with, private investors and philanthropists, in order to continue the vital work of the Foundation in the field.

#Focus Areas

Water Quality Improvement

A five-year investment plan has been developed which aims to address the three priority pollutants: dissolved inorganic nitrogen, fine sediments, and pesticides. Funding has been allocated across five separate work streams.

Community Reef Protection

The task of saving the Reef can appear enormous, but the cumulative difference that will come out of these local action projects will have real impact on the Great Barrier Reef.

Traditional Owner Reef Protection

Traditional Owner groups that hold rights and interests in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and the Reef catchments are being empowered to protect the Reef with an investment of $1.8 million across 18 Reef protection projects.

Crown of Thorns Starfish control

Expanding efforts to control crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) to
reduce coral mortality from COTS outbreaks in order to protect high ecological and economic value coral reefs.

Integrated Monitoring and Reporting

Improving health monitoring and reporting of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area that is scientifically robust with measurable investment outcomes.
